Project Overview

Originally, WHO were looking for some sort of training seminar to up-skill policy makers in the region to write better laws for Digital Health. The training material they envisioned was some slides and manuals. Instead, I pitched them something more innovative - A game that when played, would teach policymakers everything they needed to know to do four things:

  1. Distinguish which domains of law are most relevant to digital health
  2. Assess the impact of law domains on health outcomes
  3. Evaluate the impact and feasibility of different legal options and approaches
  4. Manage interconnected political, social and power influences on legal drafting, passage, and implementation

Onboard with the plan, I developed a concept and put a team in place to help develop and refine it. This ended up being Dr. Jaco Renken, and Adrian Jackson. As the game matured, we engaged Blanche Vitata and Felicity Herman who were contractors at WHO at the time to play the game with us weekly. After each iteration we would make improvements, gradually working towards a finished product. Special shout out to Dr Genevieve Howse, Coordinator of the Health Law and Governance team at WHO for overseeing the project!

The game has since been successfully piloted in the pacific and within WHO. Profiled at the Health Ministers Forum in Vanuatu, the 1st ADB Health Forum, and is currently going through internal processes to become publicly available, and there is strong interest throughout the region to build on the work already undertaken.
